Since all eyes are locked in at South Africa nowadays, we wanted to present some of the great club-music South Africa ( and Africa in general) has to offer at the moment!
DJ Zhao has compiled an incredible mixtape of African and African-inspired dance music called “Ukulwa”. ““Ukulwa” translates to “war” in Zulu, and rather than divorcing diverse sounds such as kwaito and kuduro from their political context, he weaves the tape together with samples of people praising Mandela and giving empowering paeans to freedom, ensuring that even as we dance, we remember what we’re celebrating. In Zhao’s own words: “South Africa is surely rising as a proud modern nation, even as we rejoice in these blissful rhythms, we must remember this war, and both continue, and continue to be inspired by, this struggle against domination, against injustice.””
Also throwing in a mix featuring more South African Kwaito music, by Moroka (the newest member of The Secousse Sound System from London). This mix contains older and newer Kwaito and it’s a good one! (Perfect soundtrack for the World Cup)
Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team aka Orgasmic and Teki Latex recorded a great mix for Triple J radio (aired on June 5, 2010) with “a gazillion new tracks” including tunes from people like Teki Latex, Egyptrixx, Para One, Mixik the Cat and Lil Silva and so on. Enjoy!
This FACT mix, released a couple of days ago, comes from the man behind Hyperdub, and one of modern dance music’s most celebrated producers and DJs, Kode9.
“Debuting on Tempa in 2002 with ‘Fat Larry’s Skank’, Kode9 has spent the last decade exploring an aesthetic that’s taken him from suffocating dread-filled dubstep to toxic house music. Along the way, he’s released a superb album (Memories of the Future, with frequent collaborator Spaceape) and become just as famous for his record label as his own productions: since Hyperdub’s inception in 2004, it’s released albums by Burial, Ikonika and King Midas Sound, and singles by Zomby, Terror Danjah, Cooly G, Mala and more.
This month, 9 will release the latest in K7’s DJ-Kicks series of mix CDs, a journey from elasticated house and dancehall, through soul, funk and hip-hop, to overbearing dubstep and grime. Kode is one of the world’s best DJs – his extended sets at Plastic People last year are spoken of with pure reverence, and this year he’s let out specialist mixes in 2step and “sino-grime”. “I decided to rename the mix series as well, a lot of people stumble across the May Mix as its found its way around the internet over the years, and I’m often asked “where is this month’s mix” or “where is the october 2008 mix”. FACT mix 147 was released today and it features non other than Redlight. Redlight is “best known for his drum’n’bass productions as DJ Clipz, as whom he released singles on labels like Full Cycle and Audio Zoo, Redlight is the latest alter-ego of Hugh Pescod, which he uses to refine an individual vision of bass music where grime, dubstep and squealing electro bleed into a sometimes overwhelmingly vibrant fusion, often soundtracked by ragga and grime vocalists”. Here’s the 17th installment of Mishka’s “Keep Watch”-mix series, and this time it’s AC Slater’s turn to show us what he’s into nowadays. This is what Mishka had to say about this mix:
“This month’s Keep Watch Mix comes courtesy of our hometown bass warrior AC Slater of the infamous Trouble & Bass crew. These pounding 33 minutes drive you through his upcoming release peppered with a host of acapellas to intensify the experience, which starts out with the Drop The Lime remix of Slater’s upcoming single “Take You Higher”. It then progresses to a more bass-heavy and dubstep sound provided by the help of label mates Ninjasonik and Klash77. Wrapping it up with a 3am “Eternal” vibe that comes courtesy of Luna C – the old school rave producer of 92 Eternal’s “The Feeling”.
