Maxsta – the Maxtape

by emil | May 5, 2010 | In Other No Comments

The highly anticipated debut CD from Maxsta is right around the corner, dropping 10th may!
Maxsta may seem like just any other Grime musician, however, excellent is an understatement for this young and gifted 17 year old. Living in E6, East Ham, Maxsta started mcing at the age 14 and quickly became part of a Crew called the Mucky Wolfpack, which was founded by legendary grime MC Gods gift.
Inspired by the great success of artist such as Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Kano and lethal B at the time, Maxsta stuck to his graft, regularly featuring on pirate radio shows partaking in lyrical battles with anyone and everyone. After creating a buzz for himself within the scene it was inevitable that was to be introduced to artists such as Bless Beats and Wiley who felt that they needed to start working with the kid. In tern this also forced other artists such as Jammer, Frisco, Toddla T, Wretch 32, Little Dee, Maveric, Sensor & Delusion to collaborate with him. Maxsta also spent time recording music in the infamous Always Recording studios In North London were he was further introduced with Double S, Chipmunk and Vertex. Maxsta has now become one off the UK’s most talked about Younger Grime Mcs and is destined for great things.

VBS.tv has made a mini documentary that gives you the low down and a great inside view on the London pirate radio stations.

“Before internet radio — heck, before the whole darn internet — perhaps the only weapon an ordinary person had against the dull rage of mainstream mass media lay in abandoned buildings, broken rooftop locks, and homemade antennae. These are the tools of pirate radio, the vibrant culture covered in this documentary by our pals at VBS for Palladium Boots and helmed by pirate legend Matt Mason.

Back in the 60s, when “pirate” was more closely aligned with scimitars and eyepatches than BitTorrent and DVDs, the granddaddies of London’s underground radio scene took the pirate connotations somewhat literally: they blasted rock music from abandoned postwar military sea forts (and fought off attacks – and welcomed groupies – in the process).” Enjoy!

The Riot Music EP from Donae’o is finally out on Digital Soundboy. It features the Shy FX remix we wrote about in january, and remixes from both The Nextmen and Skream.

donaeo

Shy FX mix Donae’o’s breakbeaty protest joint and gives it an appropriate video with old footage from actual riots, protests and crazy situations, both fictional and actual, while advocating peace. The Riot Music ( Shy FX Mix ) is being released on Digital Soundboy, March 2010.

bokbok

Another post for the grime-heads… Bok Bok, London club “Night Slugs” promotor ( which he runs with our friend L-Vis 1990) gets a stack of vintage grime out for an all vinyl set of some the most classic grime records from this side of the millenium.

Also, be sure to check out the first release on Bok Bok & L-vis’ label Night Slugs from Mosca. It features remixes from the likes of Julio Bashmore, Roska, Greena and L-vis 1990 and Bok Bok:

Bonus: L-vis 1990 and Bok Bok played at the Mad Division (Sub Division x Mad Decent) party in Philly not too long ago, where they played alongside big artists like UK’s Joker & Nomad, New York’s Kingdom and hometown heroes DJ Sega, Dirty South Joe, Flufftronix and Lady Prowl. Check out the video recap from the big night here ( edited by Flufftronix). Enjoy:

Our good friend James aka L-vis 1990 and his partner in crime Bok Bok recently visited Rinse FM to play a back 2 back set, and L-vis 1990 and Bok Bok aka Night slugs delivered a really hot mix for the legendary London-based radio-station. We’re also throwing in the Gucci Vump remix vid that hit the net a little while ago… Enjoy!
